Dating San Antonio: La Casa Frida

I know Houston. Like know it know it. It’s a familiarity that can only come from a lifetime of shopping and eating and sneaking around and getting lost in a place. I’ll never know San Antonio in that way, but since moving here a little over three months ago, I’ve made it my part time job to get to know this city and its offerings. We’re dating,  San Antonio and I. And things are getting pretty serious.

A few days ago, I visited La Casa Frida. I found this little gem on Instagram before we even moved here and knew I wanted to meet whatever genius was behind it. I did and she’s basically my best friend now😉. Take a peek inside…

1. How long have you been in business and was this a “dream fulfilled” situation or an unexpected endeavor?

La Casa Frida is a dream come true! November will be one year since we opened our boutique. We knew we wanted to bring a little piece of Mexico to San Antonio and started thinking of unique ways to showcase our products. We were immediately drawn to the mobile boutique concept. These mobile boutiques are a touch of character to any scenery and allow for really unique customizations. We decided to bring our own piece of inspiration to San Antonio by designing our own airstream boutique and of course it gave us the opportunity to be part of the Broadway News family!

2. What’s you best advice for balancing a full time job, a small business and motherhood?

Finding a work life balance is always difficult. Sometimes we ask ourselves if we are neglecting work for business, and vice versa. Also are we sacrificing quality time spent with our families for work in general. They key is to know our own  limits and never forget that family comes first.

3. Can you walk us through your buying process? How do you choose what enters the door of La Casa Frida?

We work closely with the artisans and designers in Mexico, we both get together to pick what we love the most, we sometimes like different things but that’s what makes it great, because we include  the taste of both of us into all the beautiful things we buy for our boutique. We travel to Mexico to hand pick items and we also get them shipped to us.

4. How important of a role does its San Antonio location play in the success of La Casa Frida?

Being situated in San Antonio plays a pivotal role in our boutique. La Casa Frida is inspired by our Mexican heritage, and San Antonio is full of Mexican heritage and pride. We love to see our clients come in and see items that reminds them of Mexico. Seeing them have a sense of nostalgia from one our products is very unique and special.

5. Name a living person you dream would walk through the door?

We can’t pick just one, we admire many Mexicans that have achieved so much in their lives such as Salma Hayek, Guillermo Del Toro, Alejandro González Iñárritu and of course Gael García! It would be an honored to have any them walk into our store.

6. What has been your biggest challenge in business ownership thus far? And what has been your proudest moment?

The biggest challenge has been balancing our personal life, family, work and our boutique. We often felt that we were nowhere near of achieving the balance but we realize how big of a support system we have with friends and family.

The proudest moment is to see just how far we have gone in only one year, we have achieved so much.
