I could be wrong, but I believe that at some point every adolescent born earlier than 1980 has lived through their own hippie phase. I certainly remember mine. Bell-bottoms, maxi dresses, platforms and even an occasional butterfly or sunflower perched above my ear. If I’m being honest with myself, I’ll admit that I dream of working up the gumption to dress the way I did back then. But apparently the older you get, the more terrified you become of not fitting in. Sure didn’t see that one coming.

I remember my mom being baffled by the fact that I would want to style myself the exact same way she had two decades ago. I also remember being baffled by the fact that she didn’t recognize how clearly awesome I looked. It wasn’t until about 2 years ago, at the first sightings of shoulder pads and double ruffled skirts worn by a teenager that I got it. My initial assumption was that she was on her way to an 80’s-themed costume party. But she wasn’t. And before long there were ruffles and spandex and zippers everywhere I turned. And it was as ridiculous to me as my hippie-wear must have been to my mom.

The straight-from-the-’80’s shoulder length earrings dangling from Rachael’s ears caught my eye, followed by Taylor’s striped oxfords. I had to force myself to turn off my product-of-the-80’s eyes to recognize just how current and stylish these two really were. It’s not second nature just yet, but I’m getting there.
