Today’s Finds

Last night I was so excited I couldn’t sleep. I believe I finally drifted off around 1:30 a.m. and I’m pretty sure I was wearing a smile. I had spent the hour or so before browsing the web for inspiration and jotting down items to search for on my trip. A roomy clutch, flowy skirts, a well-worn band t-shirt (to reconstruct) and bangles. Oh, and a baseball glove for the mister. I even laid out an outfit that would allow me to try on clothing in the middle of the store without exposing myself (I will never understand what thrift stores have against fitting rooms). When I dropped the kiddos off for school this morning, I did a jumping heel click on the way out knowing I’d get to spend the next few hours digging through heaps of 98% trash, 2%treasure.

The whole preparation thing made me laugh. Thrifting after kids is nothing like it was before them. I’d never before phoned a thrift store to see how early they open (which is WAY late, by the way). Or mapped out on paper the quickest routes from store A to store B. Or visited the housewares before even considering shopping for handbags. Makes me realize just how much more valuable time is once you become a parent. Now that’s not to say I always make the best use of it, because I don’t. Obviously.

Today I had so much fun during my Mother’s Day thrifting that I brought the boys along with me to my last stop. It was our second trip together and this time they recognized the building and got super excited as we pulled in. They darted straight towards the back to the toy section. After reminding them why the toys they pick from this store are special, they carefully and quietly chose their favorite. No arguing, no tears, no begging for what the other one had. So far we’re 2 for 2 on leaving the store happy. Take that, Walmart. Mama left happy as well. Here’s what she found…

Thank you, Sara! I just saw the shoes you wore in your post this weekend. Couldn’t decide between those and another pair so I left with neither. Go figure. Nice meeting you :).ReplyCancel
