These Films

They make my eyes happy.
A LITTLE PRINCESS
I’ve seen this one far more times than I should have seeing as I was about 16 when it came to VHS. The movie was intended for my then 6-year-old sister, but I jumped on any opportunity to watch it with her. It’s pure magic, a beautiful story and just so easy to get completely lost in. If you have a daughter or a soul, you need this movie.

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS
I’ve never wanted to love a movie as badly as I wanted to love The Royal Tenenbaums. Everything about the previews was intriguing: the music, the cast, the color palette, the costume design. Everything. But when the big day of viewing finally came….nothing. I may as well have watched it on mute. I gave it a couple of years and eventually grew to like it and will continue to watch it for aesthetics, but it will still go down as my all-time biggest movie disappointment. Oh wait, that now belongs to Hangover 2.

I AM LOVE
When Tilda Swinton is on screen, I absolutely can not take my eyes off her. I’ve yet to be able to express exactly why. She certainly does not possess what one would describe as a conventional beauty. But she appears to be a moving, breathing work of art. Perhaps I should devote an entire post to Tilda and her impeccable style and grace. Another day.

500 days
Although I have to admit the ending of 500 Days of Summer was a bit unsettling, I still count it one of the best films about love and relationships I’ve ever seen (second to Punch Drunk Love). It could easily be because for ONCE, it’s the male character who shows all the emotional range and falls the hardest and not the other way around. And Zoey Deschanel’s wardrobe…yeah, I’ll take it.

PUNCH DRUNK LOVE
One Valentine’s Day just after seeing and falling in love with this movie, I opened a box that contained a Build-A-Bear. I squeezed its hand and a familiar voice uttered the words “You’re just so beautiful…I want to punch you in the face.” And that’s when I knew I would spend the rest of my life with the giver of that bear. By the way, it was a line from the movie. I did not get punched in the face.
